Renewable energy advocacy group the Sun Day Campaign reports that solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydropower provided 55.7% of newly installed U.S. electrical generating capacity during the first half of the year - 1,965 MW of the 3,529 MW total.Citing U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission figures, the Sun Day Campaign says solar power has accounted for 32.1% of this new capacity with 1,131 MW. Wind provided 19.8% with 699 MW.The single greatest source of added generating capacity was natural gas with 44.1%, representing 1,555 MW. No new coal or nuclear capacity came online in the first half of the year. The Sun Day Campaign says renewable energy sources now account for 16.28% of all U.S. operating capacity, breaking down as follows:Hydropower - 8.57%;Wind - 5.26%;Biomass - 1.37%;Solar - 0.75%; andGeothermal - 0.33%.

Yes! Solar Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Solar Power Inc., has executed a franchise agreement with a group of private investors to open and operate the newest Yes! Solar Solutions retail operation in Cary, N.C. The Yes! Solar Solutions energy outlet will be centrally located to serve the state's north central Research Triangle Park Economic Region.Site selection for the new retail energy outlet is under way. The investment group includes Stew Miller, Kathy Miller and their general partner, Jeff Fike, all of whom are residents of Cary. The territory covers approximately 8,993 square miles and is home to more than 525,000 owner-occupied dwellings and many commercial enterprises. Electric rates in the area make it a prime market for solar relief, Yes! Solar says.

The company notes that North Carolina’s renewable energy system loan program, which features a 1% interest rate for 10 years on residential and commercial renewable energy systems up to $500,000, made the state an attractive market.“We are excited about this most recent agreement, as it adds to our growing national presence and provides our first location on the East Coast,” says Todd Lindstrom, Yes! Solar’s president. “We are very happy to be adding a seasoned group of business leaders to our growing franchise network. We look forward to working with them as we build awareness for the Yes! Solar Solutions brand and the energy independence we can provide home and business owners across the nation.”
